The Labor Cost to Make the iPhone in the US

I recently had a comment on the [February 3, 2012 How the US Lost Out on iPhone Work] post asking how much additional labor or cost would it take to make the iPhone in the US vs. China or some other Asian country.  Here is what I have come up with.

  • From what I have gathered (and of course these are just estimates by various people) the cost of labor to make the iPhone in the US vs. China is $65 in the US and $17 in China per phone.
  • Let's say that an iPhone sells for $600 and that Apple makes a 50% profit so total cost = $300 per iPhone
  • The % of labor cost in the US would be 21.7% while the labor content in China would be 5.7%.  Almost 4 times as much.
  • By making the iPhone in the US, Apple's profit profit margin per phone would drop from 50% to 42%
I totally agree with the human rights issues that this story has brought up in regards to China.  There will soon be a day where China won't be the low cost labor producer just as the US was at the turn of the century.  Then what will happen to all of those Chinese workers?  Let's hope that China will have a self-sustaining economy by then.
